Friendship in portraits of national hero

Painter. Musician. Writer. National treasure. All these descriptions, and more, could apply to John Byrne.

The portraits of Byrne, 80, by the photographer, David Eustace, trace the evolution of their friendship over decades. It would be unfair to single out any one of these beautifully crafted prints but one or two seem to capture Byrne’s vulnerability and strength. In a relatively recent image, there’s the characteristic ruffled hair, the beard and large, flamboyant moustache, but beneath his steely grey-blue gaze lies fragility. It takes courage to show one’s wounds — and skill, diligence and empathy to capture them so completely.

The Dundee painter Robert Macmillan is a generation younger than Eustace and, now in his mid-forties, has matured into a landscapist of exceptional talent. He acknowledges those who have gone before while being his own man. With a soft assured palette, these works exert a serene, almost Zen-like calm.
